How to Get Pet Hair Out of Your Car Seats and Floor Mats

If your dog rides shotgun, your car seats look like fur upholstery within a week. Vacuuming helps but doesn’t get the fur that’s wedged into the weave. Here’s what actually works.

1. Cover before you carry

The single most effective step: put a seat cover, blanket, or hammock down before your pet gets in. Prevention is a lot easier than removal.

2. Use a copper or rubber scraper

For fur that’s already embedded, a compact copper-head or rubber scraper tool like our Car Hair-Removal Tool is much more effective than a vacuum on cloth car seats. Use short, quick strokes from a few different directions to gather fur into piles you can pick up.

3. Damp rubber glove trick

If you don’t have a specialized tool handy, a slightly damp rubber dish-washing glove works surprisingly well on car seats. Just wipe in one direction and the fur balls up as you go.

4. Vacuum last, not first

Vacuum after using a scraper or damp glove, not before. Once the fur is loosened and gathered into piles, the vacuum has an easy job.

Floor mats: pull them out

Rubber floor mats are a lot easier to clean outside the car. Take them out, hose them down, and let them dry — far more effective than trying to work around them.

What not to use on car interiors

Avoid stiff-bristle brushes, wire brushes, and anything advertised as “heavy duty” on leather seats — they’ll scratch the finish. Copper-head scrapers are designed for fabric only.
